The Essence of Gemstones

Excellent Book!
This book contained vast amounts of information on every gem topic there is. It helped me tremendously in learning about gems. It also saved me a lot of money when I went out and purchased a ruby bracelet for my mother and diamond ring for my wife. I probably saved at least a thousand dollars just from using the knowledge obtained from this book. It is a great book and I recommend everyone buying it. It is a great investment!

The Feline Patient: Essentials of Diagnosis and Treatment
Published in Paperback by Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins (June, 1998)
Authors: Gary D. Norsworthy, Mitchell A. Crystal, Sharon, K. Fooshee, and Larry P. Tilley
Average review score:

Essential volume for the household that includes cats
I can't recommend "The Feline Patient" highly enough. The information in this book has saved the lives of two of my cats. Soon after I bought this book, my 15-year-old Maine Coon cat became very ill, was diagnosed with diabetes, yet the ever-increasing doses of insulin that were prescribed didn't seem to improve his condition. The more insulin he was given, the higher his glucose level became. Concerned, I began to research the problem on my own, using this book, and hypothesized that my cat had not only diabetes, but also chronic pancreatitis, and that he was not only unable to produce sufficient insulin, but was also unable to effectively use the insulin he was given. Based upon the information in this book, I requested that several other diagnostic tests be performed. These tests confirmed my hypotheses, my cat's treatment has been revised, and I now look forward to more happy months and years with him.

While grooming my ten-year-old Cymric, I felt some very small, hard bumps in her back. These were approximately the size of an ordinary matchhead. Although they were very, very small, they were painful, and she cried when I touched them, even lightly. From having read this book, I knew that any unexplained bump or lump beneath the surface of a cat's skin should be evaluated by a veterinarian immediately. My cat has required two surgeries, but thanks to early detection and treatment, her prognosis is far better than it would otherwise have been.

"The Feline Patient" was written for veterinary practitioners, so the lay person will find the vocabulary challenging, and will probably require a good veterinary dictionary as a companion to this book. Nevertheless, the person who loves and cares for feline family members will find that the benefits greatly outweigh that challenge.

Thank you, Amazon.com, for making this book available to the general public!

Ferroelectric Crystals
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (January, 1993)
Authors: Franco Jona and G. Shirane
Average review score:

This book is one of the classic books on ferroelectricity. It summarizes the scientific knowledge as of the late 1950's (first edition) at a rather elementary level and also presents a wealth of experimental data accumulated on this vast subject that are mostly valid today. The book does not contain many modern concepts such as the lattice dynamic theory of ferroelectricity. However, key precursor experimental results directly related to many "modern" concepts are summarized in a very systematic fashion. In short, this is a "must have book" for those who are interested in ferroelectricity and ferroelectric materials and I highly recommend it.

Fortune Telling by Crystals and Semiprecious Stones: A Practical Guide to Their Use in Divination, Meditation and Healing
Published in Paperback by Aquarian Pr (April, 1987)
Author: Ursula Markham

Awesome
This book lays out a system using stones/crystals. It also includes full color photos of them on the inside covers- a major lacking in most books on the subject of crystals. Since the UK & US names differ, you could take it with you to a gem/rock shop to be sure you are getting the right stone or to find a similar colored stone to take its place. The author did tarot readings originally, but now uses a collection of ~150 stones (many duplications with different sizes of the same 32 stones) The author offers a mail-order course: "Working with Crystals"~contact info on her website (The Hypnothink Foundation) *2 ready to go sets are "The Crystal Wisdom Kit" (here @ amazon!) and "The Crystal Arcana" (UK)

Finally, the information I need on Heirloom!
The section on Heirloom alone is worth the price of the book. Every piece is listed in every color, with prices, and dates! The photographs are in vivid color, with every piece identified. These gals have got it together. Milk Glass is a revelation as well. Lots of goodies in this book. Lots of color and more information than I've ever seen about this period. A must for Fostoria collectors!

This book is excellent!
As an inner city school educator, I encourage all teachers to read this eye opening book. I had a chance to hear the author in person. She has a story to tell. You leave her feeling that you can change the world. The book is easy to read and if you are like me you will pick it up again and again. I learned a lot. I refer to it often. It is informative and provides the reader with some actual things one can do in the classroom. Several other teachers have read it also. Their comment is "The book has really helped". It will be a part of our professional development program this school year.

GEMS AND CRYSTALS : FROM THE AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY
Published in Hardcover by Simon & Schuster (January, 1991)
Authors: Anna Sofianides and George Harlow
Average review score:

An Unbeatable Reference Source for Gems and Minerals!
This oversized "coffee table" style book, contains some of the most impressive gem and mineral photography in print. The photos were taken by Erica and Harold Van Pelt who are the most revered gemological photographers in the world. In addition, the text is well organized and flawlessly researched. Gems and Crystals really captures the magic responsible for mankind's obsession with gem minerals. I highly recommend this book to anyone with a passion for gems.
